Best US Columns: OUR STRANGE FEAR OF FOREIGN TONGUES: Nataly Kelly of the Boston Globe in THE WEEK (Issue 375-376] p. 14.
"What makes the largest military power on earth tremble in its boots?" asked Nataly Kelly. Any language that's not English. Many Americans regard an suggestion that we should ever see or hear - let along be asked to converse in--Spanish or any other foreign language " as a threat to their identity, both as individuals and as a nation." Given our history and diversity, this "linguistic paranoia" is baffling. The U.S. itself is amazingly polyglot: its citizens speak an estimated 311 languages and 20 percent speak something other than English at home. In a global economy, having a multilingual population is vital to competing with nations whose workforces often speak multiple languages fluently. So why do so many people become incensed whenever anyone suggests Americans should be studying Spanish, or French, or Arabic, or Mandarin? Learning other tongues is actually the patriotic thing to do.
